Summer Is Almost Here by PAS/CAL (official video)
Casimer Pascal of lavish Detroit indie-poppers PAS/CAL is one of those rare people who could claim his biggest flaw is his perfectionism and not be a big fat liar. If his septet's excellent new full-length debut (after three equally strong EPs), I Was Raised on Matthew, Mark, Luke & Laura, wasn't quite as widely anticipated as Chinese Democracy, the multi-year wait still set impossibly lofty expectations. The video for deceptively sunny standout "Summer Is Almost Here" comes as more of a surprise, seeing how it's sort of almost Thanksgiving, and Pascal's perfectionism pays off in full.
In the clip, Pascal stands alone in a coat and scarf on a beach busy with surfers and sunbathers. See, the new album's Christmas-related "Little Red Radio" is actually more summery than "Summer Is Almost Here", despite all those solar-bronzed hooks; this vivid, well-done video brings out the narrator's sense of detachment from the simple-minded glee and garish flesh of the summer spectacle. "Short pants are a sign of weakness/ Sunglasses hide a mental vacuum," Pascal sings. Personally, sometimes I actually like a little simple-minded glee and garish flesh, but not when it's cold inside. And I definitely can't afford to look forward to any of that shit when winter is still on its way. Directed by Keira Alexandra with Andy Miller.
